Where Do You Start to Boost Your SEO?

Want to boost your website SEO but don’t know where to start? The process can be time-consuming and confusing and it requires a lot of research, but you know you need to in order to compete. This 5-step guide can easily increase your website SEO by hundreds of points from one Google search to another.

There are over 200 data points in Google’s ranking algorithm. Don’t worry, you don’t have to hit them all. There are between 5-10 key elements that help more than the others, some of which are your website content, your page titles, keywords, and backlinks. These five steps will get you well on your way to a higher rank.

Google Business Profile and Maps Setup

The first tip is to ensure your business is listed properly in the Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) and Google Maps (formerly Places). (Thanks for all the changes, Google.) If you aren’t registered, it isn’t hard to get added. Using the free tools Google provides is a sure way to get noticed.

Use Keywords in Your Domain

The second tip is for those who have yet to set up their domain name. Create a website domain that is keyword targeted. New domain URLs should end with your keywords for best rank results. For instance, if you are a plumber in Kailua, an effective domain might be 24hourplumbingkailua.com. Already have a domain? Not to worry. You can still rank without it. Don’t change your domain now. You’ll lose whatever ranking you currently have. New sites take time to rank, even with great keywords.

Backlinks To Your Website

The next step is to get backlinks for your website. The easiest way I have found to do this is to get listed on business directory sites. Choose the ones that highlight your industry.

Then write a blog post about it. Your blog post will contain keywords, site links, and useful information your client may be searching for.

Blogs are Still a Thing

Speaking of blogs, the next tip is to create a blog post for each page of your website. By doing this you can ensure each page has backlinks pointing to it. The point is to give as many markers as you can to flag Google’s attention. Think about the behavior of your future customers. Are they looking for information? Do they need their questions answered? Your blog posts can help them in their search. You become the trusted authority on the subject.

Google AdWords

Next, skip to the head of the line (read: top of the search page) by creating a Google AdWords campaign then place your Ad on Google search and YouTube. This will help you in two ways. First, it will allow you to target your keywords to that campaign, and second, it will show in Google results in the same way as any other Ad. You won’t see this in your YouTube ads as they aren’t shown through YouTube, but it’s the same as any Ad on YouTube.

Submit Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

[BONUS TIP] The last step I’m going to mention is to submit your website site map to Google. The easiest way is to use the form on Google Search Console. There, you will find many more ways to increase your site’s searchability.
